Dog-Friendly Garden Dining

TL;DR

Worth it? Yes, with a dog or after a garden walk

Location: The Grand Arch, Chinese Garden

Getting there: Chinese Garden (EW25)

Spend: About S$25 to S$30 a head

Must try: The Canopy Laksa

Good to know: Dogs sit alfresco only, so go early or late

Canopy Chinese Garden in Singapore is a restaurant inside Jurong Lake Gardens that welcomes dogs. You sit with yours in a covered colonnade, with the garden on one side and fans running overhead.

Dogs sit alfresco only. The air-conditioned room is closed to them, so plan your visit around the heat.

A Restaurant Inside the Grand Arch

Canopy is on the ground floor of the Grand Arch, the long timber building in the Chinese Garden. The same building holds the Jurong Lake Gardens Gallery, an exhibition on the history of the gardens.

The alfresco area is a colonnade of timber columns with ceiling fans between them. Grey metal tables and chairs face out into the garden.

There are two ways in by MRT. From Chinese Garden (EW25), the nearest entrance is at the Chinese Garden Bridge. From Lakeside (EW26), enter at Lakeside Plaza and cross the White Rainbow Bridge.

Bringing a Dog: What Alfresco Means Here

The staff were good about our dog.

Heat is the thing to plan around. The colonnade is covered and the fans help, but it is still outdoor air in Singapore. Go at opening or in the last hour, and avoid the early afternoon. The staff asked whether our dog needed water. We had brought our own bowl.

If you drive, use the North Carpark and turn in at Chinese Garden Road. Parking costs S$0.60 per half hour. It is free from 5am to 8.30am daily, and from noon to 2pm on weekdays. Jurong Lake Gardens also has a 2,200 square metre Dog Run where dogs can run off the leash, open daily from 8am to 10pm.

The Indoor Dining Room

Indoors is a long hall under rows of birdcage lanterns, with lattice-backed timber chairs. It is air-conditioned throughout.

Canopy takes bookings for weddings and private events, so ask if you are planning something larger.

What to Order

We ordered two dishes between us, both from the QR-code menu at the table. It listed more dishes than the website did.

Canopy Laksa

The laksa was S$18 when we visited. It comes with thick rice noodles, two prawns, breaded fried pieces, half a hard-boiled egg, tobiko and a handful of rocket on top.

The gravy is the highlight. It is balanced, mildly spicy and light on the coconut.

Smoked Duck and Eggs

This plate was S$17. You get scrambled eggs, a slice of toasted sourdough, roasted potato cubes, a small dressed salad and several slices of smoked duck breast. It is a simple brunch plate, and the duck is the reason to order it.

What It Costs

The lemonade was S$6 and the yuzu lychee fizz was S$10. Two mains and two drinks came to S$51, so allow S$25 to S$30 a head.

For a restaurant inside Jurong Lake Gardens, with fans running and trees on one side, we think that is fair. You are paying for the setting as much as the food, and the drinks are where it shows. To spend less, order the lemonade in place of the fizz.

Before you go

  1. Order the laksa. For drinks, the lemonade is the better value of the two we tried.
  2. Canopy sometimes closes to the public for weddings and company dinners. Check the calendar on its website before you go.

Do These as a Pair

Walk the Chinese Garden before lunch, and see the Jurong Lake Gardens Gallery in the same building while you are there. Read our Jurong Lake Gardens guide.

The Verdict: Is Canopy Chinese Garden Worth It?

Yes, if you have a dog or you are already at Jurong Lake Gardens.

If you live in Singapore and have a dog, this is an easy choice. You get a covered table inside Jurong Lake Gardens, with your dog on the chair beside you. The laksa is good and the duck plate is decent.

If you are visiting Singapore for a few days, it is worth it if you are in the area.

Come for the garden. Eat here because you are already in it.
