Singapore’s futuristic garden: Gardens by the Bay

Located next to the Marina Reservoir, Gardens by the Bay offers breathtaking waterfront views and a massive collection of flora. Since opening its doors, it has welcomed millions of visitors who come to marvel at the fusion of nature and engineering.

The destination comprises three distinct spaces: Bay South Garden, Bay East Garden, and Bay Central Garden. Bay South is the largest and most popular, housing the iconic cooled conservatories and the towering Supertrees. It is a space where sustainability meets design, offering a cool respite from Singapore’s tropical heat.

This project represents a masterpiece of landscape architecture. The design team created sustainable ecosystems. The cooled conservatories use energy-efficient technologies, while the Supertrees harvest solar energy and collect rainwater. The seamless integration of structural engineering with living plants showcases how urban spaces can adapt to climate change while remaining aesthetically stunning.

Key Highlights of Gardens by the Bay Singapore

You could easily spend a full day exploring the various zones. If you are short on time, ensure these major highlights are on your itinerary.

Supertree Grove

Check out the intricate design of the Supertrees from one of the many elevated vantage points around the gardens.

The Supertree Grove is perhaps the most recognised feature of Gardens by the Bay SG. These vertical gardens are built up to 50 metres in height. By day, their large canopies provide shade and shelter. At night, they come alive during the Garden Rhapsody, a dazzling light and sound show that is free to the public.

Flower Dome

Take a relaxing stroll through the massive, climate-controlled Flower Dome to see exotic plants and seasonal floral displays.

The Flower Dome is the world’s largest glass greenhouse. It recreates the cool, dry climates of Mediterranean regions, as well as parts of South Africa and Australia. Inside, you’ll find thousand-year-old olive trees, striking baobabs, and ever-changing floral displays in the central Flower Field. Kept at a comfortable 23°C to 25°C, it offers a refreshing escape from Singapore’s humidity outside.

Cloud Forest

Experience an incredible high-elevation environment and walk through the mist on the aerial walkways inside the Cloud Forest.

While the Flower Dome is about horizontal expanse, the Cloud Forest is all about verticality. Upon entering, a 35-metre tall mountain greets you, covered in lush vegetation and shrouded in mist from the world’s tallest indoor waterfall. You can take a lift to the top and descend via the Cloud Walk and Treetop Walk walkways, examining epiphytes and ferns up close.

Themed Gardens

Scenic footbridges like this one connect you to the park’s many beautiful—and completely free!—themed outdoor gardens.

Beyond the paid attractions, the Heritage Gardens explore the history of Singapore’s main ethnic groups (Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Colonial) through plants. The World of Plants gardens offer a closer look at biodiversity, focusing on plant life cycles and systematics.

Exploring the Outdoors

While the air-conditioned domes are tempting, the outdoor areas offer unique perspectives of the Singapore skyline and the lush greenery that surrounds it.

The brilliance of Gardens by the Bay Singapore lies in its ability to present nature’s beauty within a dense urban setting. The lush lawns near the Supertree Grove are perfect for picnics, and the wide paths accommodate prams and wheelchairs easily, making it accessible for everyone.

Tree Top Walk Experience

Visitors walking along the elevated OCBC Skyway, a suspended bridge connecting the lush, plant-covered Supertrees at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore.
Take a stroll on the OCBC Skyway to experience the massive Supertrees up close and get a stunning aerial view of the gardens below.

For an aerial perspective, head to the OCBC Skyway. Suspended 22 metres above the ground between two Supertrees, this 128-metre aerial walkway offers a magnificent tree top walk experience. You get panoramic views of the Gardens and the Marina Bay skyline. While Singapore also boasts a famous suspension bridge at MacRitchie Reservoir, this urban version allows you to walk among the canopy of the man-made giants, providing a unique contrast of steel and nature.

SUPERTREE OBSERVATORY

Low-angle view looking up at the Supertree Observatory at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, featuring a circular glass observation deck nestled within its wire canopy.
Head up to the Supertree Observatory for unbeatable panoramic views of the Marina Bay skyline.

If you prefer sweeping views over ground trails, the Supertree Observatory offers a stunning 360-degree look at the city’s green canopy. Pro Tip: Head up around 6:30 PM to capture the golden hour skyline and secure a prime, unobstructed spot for the 7:45 PM Garden Rhapsody light show. Tickets are SGD 14 for adults (SGD 10 for residents), making it a high-value way to get both daytime and nighttime vantage points on a single admission.

Visitor Tips and Practical Information

To help you plan your visit effectively, here are some practical tips tailored for travellers.

Best Times to Visit

Visitors walking along an elevated metal walkway inside the glass Cloud Forest dome at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, with a tall dinosaur statue visible among the lush greenery.
Try to visit on a weekday or right when the domes open.

The outdoor gardens are open from 5:00 am to 2:00 am daily, while the cooled conservatories operate from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.

  • For cooler weather: Visit the outdoor gardens early in the morning (around 8:00 am) or late in the evening.
  • For photography: The “Golden Hour” just before sunset offers spectacular lighting for the Supertrees.
  • For crowds: Weekdays are significantly quieter than weekends. If you must visit on a weekend, go as soon as the domes open.

Entrance Fees and Ticketing

Entry to the main outdoor gardens is free. However, you need tickets for the Flower Dome, Cloud Forest, OCBC Skyway, and the Supertree Observatory.

  • It is often cheaper to buy a “Two Conservatories” bundle online in advance.
  • Check for family packages if you are travelling with children.
  • Ticket queues can be long on-site, so digital booking is highly recommended.

The peaceful Sundial Garden is one of many beautifully manicured—and completely free!—spaces to explore within the historic Singapore Botanic Gardens.

If this visit sparks your interest in horticulture, consider visiting the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Located a short taxi or MRT ride away, it is Singapore’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Unlike the futuristic Gardens by the Bay, the Botanic Gardens offer a more traditional, colonial-style park experience with a stunning Orchid Garden. Check out our other attractions!
